It's residents and long term visitors have included Davy Crockett, Booker T. Washington, Daniel Boone, Lewis & Clark, George Washington, and many others. The Christiansburg Retail District, home of the NRV Mall and several major shopping centers and restaurants, plays a major role in the thriving economic environment of the New River Valley. Riner
Located in south central Montgomery County, Riner has historically been a rural farming community, though that has changed in the last several years. Now home to an 18-hole golf course and new thriving neighborhoods, Riner has become a very desirable location for families in the New River Valley. Riner is also home to the National School Blue Ribbon Auburn Elementary School, one of only 5 schools in the state to win that award. Riner charm includes the Brush Creek Buffalo Farm and Restaurant, featuring healthy buffalo products in an old country store setting, and the annual Heritage festival.
Shawsville/Elliston/Lafayette
In the Northeastern corner of the county, Shawsville, Elliston and Layfayette are home to many historical sites, including the Waldron Farm, an original dairy farm from the 1700s, as well as the Pappas home, a 250 year old home in which George Washington and Lewis & Clark were guests. Not only do Shawsville and Ellison have a strong historical background, it is a prospering manufacturing area with Rowe Furniture as the featured business in the Elliston Industrial park.
