The month of August is full of things to do in Montgomery County-Blacksburg-Christiansburg, Virginia.  Earlier this month Christiansburg hosted the 2010 Dixie Boys World Series and downtown Blacksburg made way for the thirtieth annual Steppin’ Out festival.  If you missed out on these events, don’t worry, there is still plenty left to do.

On Saturday August 14 the first ever Tastes & Treats of the New River Valley will take place in downtown Christiansburg. The festival is from 11:30 AM to 3 PM and will spotlight restaurants from throughout the New River Valley. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, providing patrons the opportunity to taste a wide variety of local cuisine.

The EastMont Tomato Festival is also on Saturday, August 14 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Meadowbrook Center in Shawsville. The festival is in its third year and is organized by the Eastern Montgomery Communities of Elliston, Lafayette and Shawsville. The 2009 EastMont Tomato Festival drew more than 500 people from throughout southwestern Virginia. This year’s event features a parade, tomato tasting of an assortment of varieties as well as several activities for children.

On Saturday August 21, from 10 AM to 3 PM, the Montgomery Museum in Christiansburg will be hosting its annual Heritage Day Festival. This event is a way for all Montgomery County residents to celebrate their heritage with vintage craft demonstrations, historical re-enactments and antique engines and machinery on display. The festival will also feature art from area artists, food and live entertainment.

If you are new to the area or just interested in meeting other area professionals, 
Up on the Roof is your event. The goal of this event is to bring area professionals, young and old, together for socializing and enjoying venues in downtown Blacksburg. It is held on the last Thursday of every month, spring through fall, on the rooftop of the Kent Square parking garage in Blacksburg. This month’s “Up on the Roof” will be on Thursday, August 26 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. In its third year, the July “Up on the Roof” had over 400 attendees who enjoyed music, food and adult beverages. College Avenue in downtown Blacksburg will host Gobblerfest 2010 on Saturday, August 27 from 3 PM to 8 PM. Gobblerfest was first conceived in the fall of 2008 as a welcome festival for students, staff, faculty and members of the community. Last year, an estimated 18,000 people attended the Gobblerfest street fair which included improvisational performances by the Virginia Tech Department of Theatre and Cinema, acoustic music on the porch of the Graduate Life Center, and a silent auction to benefit the newly established Community Initiatives Fund.

The fun doesn’t stop in August in Montgomery County-Blacksburg-Christiansburg.  There is still plenty of other things to look forward to this fall. 

The Riner Heritage Day Festival will be Saturday, September 11 from 10 AM to 3 PM.  This annual festival celebrates the heritage of the Riner community with festivities include live music, food and a parade. 

2010 marks the 37th anniversary of the Wilderness Trail Festival in downtown Christiansburg. The event is Saturday, September 18 from 9 AM to 5 PM and features live music and theater, food, exhibits and a car show. 

On Saturday, October 30 the Blacksburg Partnership will host its second annual Blacksburg Brew Do at the First and Main Shopping District from noon to 5 PM. This craft beer festival spotlights beers from more than a dozen Mid-Atlantic breweries, live music and food from area restaurants as well as a home brew competition.
